When I was 16 I moved to Hefei, China for a year and was on an episode of the Chinese sitcom Wo Ai Fan Mi Li. It was a total fricking trainwreck.

That first line was "My name is ????, I come from America"

then you talk about the cold and food.

I am Chinese, I get it all.

It's extra awkward for this person of European lineage to watch since, while someone in Asia or other parts of the world can't tell the difference, it's very clear that was kiddo Simone playing an adult man's S.O. XD

My biggest accomplishment at 16 was not having my head dunked in the toilet by a jock. You went to another country. "Learned" the language and made it on to a popular TV show. And I like to add in spite of my ignorance I think you did a damn good job. Most kids have 2 months to prepare for a play in school and completely fail. 16, 1 day to learn your lines, in a language you are not familiar with on TV (which make it way more scary). But of course I am gonna bring up the elephant in the room. The girl in the video does NOT look like you.

I took Mandarin in college and omg I love and hated it lol like I loved the lessons but I hated that I had to speak in front of the class so I shared the same face and talking as you lol. the best part was when I had to speak from my desk and my brain died on me I'd scramble through my Chinese text book trying to find words that made up what I wanted to say and ended up saying something completely wrong lol

Hahahah I really LMAO. Btw the sitcom's name literally in English is the countryside crawfish restaurant. You look so chubby and chill while totally dramatic in this show, Hahahaha.

You have the talent tho, and tbh what the rest Chinese ppl talked is not Mandarin, I assume it's Hefei? dialect or but very similar to Mandarin.

When i was like 3 Toys R us wanted me in one of their ads (I was actually pretty adorable like imagine a reincarnation of Boo from Monsters Inc. and that was me idk what happened tho) so my parents take me and everything but then I suddenly got stage fright and would not do the commercial. I could of been famous

I'm living in Poland for one and a half year (and been married to a Polish woman for more than 6 years) and I still cannot have a basic conversation in Polish. I'm pretty sure my extended family thinks I'm an Idiot. The truth is, I'm don't have talent for foreigner languages.

I know this is kinda old, but if it helps you feel any better, you sounded like most of the people I was in class with. Class specifically to learn Mandarin at a very accelerated rate. Where we did nothing but learn chinese for 60+ hours a week. For ~18 months. Actually, you sounded better than a good portion of them.

Won't alleviate the embarrassment after the fact, but might help you feel a little better about your language-learning-on-extremely-short-notice skills, which are pretty solid.

As a person from HK and a person who speaks Chinese, I can tell you that in that short period of time your Chinese isn't bad! It's considered really really good for someone who just learned it!

Did Simone still have a bit of a Swedish accent at 16? She doesn't sound quite like a native American English speaker in the English scenes.
